Funding for the MEDIA Programme is secure until the end of 2013. The future of the MEDIA Programme after this needs to be decided and, to that effect, the European Commission has launched a public consultation on the future of EU funding for the audiovisual sector after 2013. The deadline for public contributions to the consultation is Tuesday, November 30th.
The consultation is open to individual citizens, public and private bodies, local/regional authorities, ministries and relevant stakeholders in the audiovisual sector both inside and outside the EU and in the European institutions and associations. The objective of the process is to gather input on the next round of the MEDIA programme after 2013 with the emphasis placed on the group’s objectives, activities and types of support.
The online consultation is just one part of the wider public consultation, responses to which will be taken into account in the Commission's proposal for a new MEDIA programme (to be adopted by the European Parliament and Council), following an assessment of possible social, economic and environmental impacts.
The European audiovisual sector has to address a number of strategic issues, in particular the reinforcement of its competitiveness, the adoption of new technologies and new economic models. Thus the newly decided MEDIA Programme will need to address the needs of the AV industry in order to adapt to the new context, and to help it find new ways of creating value and driving revenues.
The Commission will take this consultation into account when drafting its proposal in view of establishing a Decision of the European Parliament and Council for a new Programme of support for the European audiovisual sector from 2014 onwards.
