Network Ireland Television (NITV) has acquired the international sales rights to ‘Kavi’, a highly rated short film that was officially selected in the Oscar Live Action Short Film Category last March.
NITV managing director, Derry O’Brien explains to IFTN how the deal came about: “I met writer/director Gregg Helvey during my visit to L.A. in March last, during the run up to the Academy Awards,”he tells us. “Gregg’s film, ‘Kavi’ had already won the Student Academy Award for best narrative film in 2009, along with the Best of Fest at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. ‘Kavi’ was still in its international festival run but Gregg and I stayed in contact. Now he has selected NITV to distribute his powerful Oscar nominated short worldwide. “
The company has already confirmed a sale for his film to the Sundance Channel in the U.S. and aim to maximise the sales potential of ‘Kavi’ over the next two years. Together with ‘The Door’ and ‘Granny O’Grimm’s Sleepy Beauty’, NITV now represents three of the ten short films selected in both, the live action and animated categories for this year’s Academy Awards.
