The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has published a draft version of its Strategy Statement 2011-2013 for public consultation. This document outlines the proposed mission, vision and values of the BAI and goals the group hopes to achieve. The deadline for receipt of responses is Monday, November 29th.
Along with outlining the company’s vision and values, the document also sets out the proposed operational guiding principles that the BAI will apply in a bid to ensuring that broadcasting in Ireland reflects the contemporary and democratic nature of society.
The statement also explains that the BAI aims to facilitate the development of a responsible, vibrant Irish broadcasting sector which will deliver diversity in content, programming, information and entertainment to viewers and listeners living in Ireland whilst offering high quality and innovative indigenous broadcasting content to Irish audiences and maintaining plurality of ownership, content and viewpoint.
Finally the document outlines the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Statement of Strategy for 2011 to 2013, a three-year period where the BAI’s work will focus on several themes including:
1. Becoming a Trusted and Informed voice on Broadcasting
2. Providing a Diverse Range of Broadcasting Services and Content
3. Ensuring Plurality in Irish Broadcasting
4. Holding Broadcasters to Account Under Statute and Contract
5. Working with the Broadcasting Sector to Enhance its Capacity
6. Devising Broadcasting Codes and Standards
7. Informing, Educating and Empowering Audiences
8. Developing the BAI as an Agile, Effective and Professional Public Service Organisation
The purpose of this phase of consultation is to provide interested parties (individuals, groups or associations) with an opportunity to comment on the draft Strategy Statement before it is finalised by the Authority in December.
Speaking at the launch of the public consultation, Bob Collins, Chairperson of the BAI said: “This first Strategy Statement from the Authority is an important opportunity to set out the values that will shape the work of the BAI in the coming years.” And, while acknowledging the difficulties facing broadcasters in the current economic circumstances he said that the BAI wishes to “Support and encourage ambition and aspiration in Irish Broadcasting”.
A copy of the draft Strategy Statement including consultation questions is available from the BAI via its website: www.bai.ie or by emailing consultations@bai.ie. As mentioned above, the closing date for the receipt of responses is Monday 29th November 2010.
