Director Ian Power (Dental Breakdown) recently travelled to Los Angeles to meet with distributors, studios and agents as part of the Directors Finders Series programme organised by the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI). The programme gives Irish feature directors an opportunity to screen their film to key distributors & film industry representatives in an effort to gain a US distribution deal.

Ian’s feature won this year’s award which led to the above events and culminated in the screening of ‘The Runway’ in the DGA Theatre on Sunset Boulevard to an invited audience of U.S film agents, distributors, press and industry professionals who joined SDGI’s Conor Horgan, Birch Hamilton and DGA’s Kathy Garmezy. This was followed by a Q&A session chaired by Jim Sheridan (Brothers).

Since the early October visit Ian has remained in contact with a number of distributors regarding the feature following the screening and is in discussion with other industry representatives regarding forthcoming projects. He commented on the experience, saying: “All told, the Director’s Finders Series far exceeded my expectations. I had thought that it would be a good opportunity for the film and for me as a director, but the truth is that it was a great opportunity.”

‘The Runway’ is written and directed by Ian and tells the true story of a South American pilot who crash landed his plane into a field in Mallow, Co. Cork in 1983. Told from the point of view of a nine-year-old local boy the feature stars Mexican actor Domain Bichir (Che) alongside Irish actress Kerry Condon (Rome). It is produced by Macdara Kelleher (Colony), Brendan McDonald (The Yard) and Bernard Michaux (Lumen).

The film’s screening came after SDGI’s tenth anniversary celebrations which featured a launch of the film at a presentation Ceremony and was attended by British directors, Michael Apted (The World is Not Enough) and Sir Alan Parker (Evita).
