FÁS STI & IADT Seek Script Clinic Applications | The Irish Film & Television Network

The purpose of the four day session is to bring projects completed on a course (or in isolation) to the stage where they are ready to apply funding and/or be ready to meet and present their projects to producers. The intensive development process will hothouse their script under the guidance of experienced script consultants.

The clinic will further seek to provide participants with expert and peer-to-peer feedback on their project and, lastly, there will be an emphasis on practical advice as to how to grow a career as a screenwriter.

The four days will consist of lectures and workshops in the mornings with each project being brought through an individual development process in the afternoon sessions. The course will cover the following:

• Developing a draft of a script to deadline
• Writing treatments and outlines
• Replacing expositional dialogue with visual storytelling
• Developing vivid characters
• Approaching potential collaborators and financiers professionally
• Working successfully with producers

There will be follow-up meetings six weeks later to give guidance and feedback on the progress each writer has made.

The course tutors include Mary Kate O’Flanagan, Rachel O’Flanagan and Jean Rice. Mary Kate O Flanagan, who works as a script consultant and trainer with writers and producers in Ireland and internationally. She trained with David Howard, author of The Tools of Screenwriting and Martin Daniel, Professor of Screenwriting at USC. She is a guest lecturer at The National Film School of Ireland, has an MA in Screenwriting and is a film reviewer for Newstalk 106.

Rachel O’Flanagan is one of Ireland’s most experienced and highly trained script editors and has worked with leading producers and screenwriters on a variety of projects, including animation, television drama and feature films, including several award-winning and critical and commercial successes. She has been a guest lecturer in screenwriting film development and script editing at The Huston Film School, The National Film School/IADT and Filmbase and has consulted on various television and feature film projects with Irish, UK, Scandinavian and US-based production companies and writers.

Jean Rice has worked in the film and television industry for over 20 years in Ireland, the UK and the US. She has lectured on the BA Film & Television and on the MA in Screenwriting for Film & Television at the National Film School at IADT for the last ten years.

The script clinic is aimed towards emerging writers who have completed a post-graduate screenwriting course or have professional equivalent experience. Participants will have a feature film project (at outline or early draft stage) to bring through the clinic. This will not necessarily be the project they developed on their post-graduate course.

Would-be participants are asked to apply to film@fas.ie (with Script Clinic in subject heading) with a CV and a one-page outline of the work in progress (N.B. This can be a new project that is at outline stage; successful applicants will be asked to submit a 10-page outline or early draft a week before the course start date).

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, September 1st. The Script Clinic that will run from Thursday, September 23rd until Saturday, September 26th. It will take place in Dublin’s Odessa Club and costs €200 to attend.
