RTÉ Seeks Deputy Director of Programmes

RTÉ is currently inviting applications for the post of Deputy Director of Programmes in its Television department. The Deputy Director of Programmes plays a key role in the origination, management and delivery of RTÉ’s home-produced programmes, both in-house and commissioned. The outgoing deputy, Mary Curtis begins her new role of Director of Digital Switchover in September.

The position of deputy Director of Programmes offers the opportunity to shape the future direction of RTÉ Television as a member of the Programme Strategy group. The role will involve deputising for the Director of Programmes and the chosen individual will be responsible for the oversight of a number of defined programme areas across RTÉ TV channels. Working with the programmes management team with a goal of maintaining and developing creative, efficient and high quality in-house production capability, the new deputy will also assist with reporting and compliance requirements. The postholder will furthermore liaise with TV Commercial and RTÉ Publishing on programme-related revenue generation opportunities.

The job listing on the RTÉ careers website describes the kind of individual being sought for the role, saying: “The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to public service broadcasting and have significant editorial and programme team management experience. S/he will possess a track record in developing innovative programming and a thorough understanding of the television production and commissioning process. A clear understanding of managing television output in a changing regulatory and competitive environment along with exceptional organisational and people management skills are essential to this role.” Furthermore candidates would ideally have a working knowledge of Irish.

As previously mentioned, the outgoing deputy, Mary Curtis, will begin on her new role of Director of Digital Switchover in early September. She will be responsible for an effective national transition to digital television using the new Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) system.

Deputy Director of Programmes applicants are currently being invited to submit their Curriculum Vitae together with a cover letter and a short paper outlining how they would address the challenges and opportunities facing RTÉ Television over the next 3 years (this is be attached as one document, preferably in Word 2003 or earlier version) by no later than 5.00p.m. Monday 30th August 2010.
