Nemeton Looks to Find New Presenting Talent
30 Jul 2010 :
Waterford based production company, Nemeton has decided to build on the success of its previous educational programmes and is currently enrolling for an intensive TV Presenters Course which it will run over 4 consecutive days in its television studio.

Nemeton’s Learning and Development Manager Miriam Mulrennan says of the upcoming course “We have known for sometime now that there are many people out there who want the opportunity to explore if they have an aptitude to work in front of camera. Additionally there are many others who have had a taste of doing this kind of work (whether in college, or in a more informal setting) and they want to build on this with some solid training. This course if for both of these groups, and it comes at an opportune time, because through our relationship with the national broadcasters, we are very aware of the challenges they face, as do we, in locating new talent. For this reason we have been inclusive and open in the preparation of this curriculum. We are therefore confident that we are providing the key skills and knowledge that the industry itself requires”.

Nemeton’s Training arm has been ‘officially’ operating since 2005, although the company has always had connections with training activities. Something which Miriam is very proud of, as she tells IFTN: “I guess what makes us and for example the upcoming course unique, is to some degree ‘authenticity’.” She says “We have to stand over the quality of the training we provide. We are one of the largest television companies in the country, producing in excess of 200 hours of programming a year. The excellence which we achieve in our television programming must also be reflected within our training programmes. For example the post graduate programme we run with Waterford Institute of Technology, this is a Level 8 academic programme. For us, a private company, to be given the huge responsibility of delivering a post graduate course on behalf of a college confirms that our commitment to training is real and unambigous.”

The upcoming programme will include tutorials on aspects such as voice and speech coaching, technical activities (camera, sound and lighting), core presenter skills and on camera techniques amongst other skills. According to Miriam this intensive approach works best according because, as she tells us: “Participants are immersed in a production environment. They are here in Nemeton’s Television studio, we are not replicating something abstract, we are using real resources, practicing industry professionals – and all the while there are programmes going out to the broadcasters from under the same roof. Short of putting the participants straight-to-air, it doesn’t get more authentic than this”.

The course will run from the 13th to the 16th of September in the Nemeton studios. The deadline to submit applications for this course is 20th August.
