Irish Projects to Screen at Traverse Film Fest
16 Jul 2010 :
Secret of Kells
Multi award-winning Irish features including Ken Wardrop's ‘His & Hers’, Tomm Moore's ‘The Secret of Kells’ and John and Kieran Carney’s ‘Zonad’ have been selected to screen at the Traverse City Film Festival as have Irish shorts ‘The Crush’ and ‘The Pool’. The Michigan-based event was founded by Academy Award-winning Michael Moore (Bowling for Columbine).

Ken Wardop’s ‘His & Hers’ which has featured prominently in the Irish box office of late will screen in the festivals Dangerous Docs section on Saturday, July 31st. The feature combines observation and charm in its exploration of women's relationships with the men in her life. Speaking recently about the documentary Michael Moore described it as "One of the most moving and original films I've seen this year. No one has ever made a documentary like this one. In a summer of tired and stale movies from Hollywood, ‘His and Hers' is a breath of fresh air blowing in from the midlands of Ireland."

The Oscar-nominated ‘Secret of Kells’ is an animated retelling of the provenance of Ireland's cherished Artefact, the Book of Kells featuring the voices of Brendan Gleeson (Into the Storm) and Mick Lally (Alexander). Screening as part of the festival’s Kids Fest on Wednesday, July 28th, it is written and directed by Tomm Moore (Song of the Sea) co-directed by Nora Twomey (Backwards Boy) and produced by Paul Young (Skunk Fu!) for Cartoon Saloon.

‘Zonad’, a caper which sees Simon Delaney (Happy Ever Afters) fooling a gullible village in the guise of an alien is to receive a midnight screening on Friday, July 30th during the Michigan fest. It is produced by Ed Guiney (The Magdalene Sisters), Andrew Lowe (The Wind that Shakes the Barley) and John McDonnell (Song for a Raggy Boy) for Element Pictures.

Shorts-wise, Thomas Hefferon’s ‘The Pool’ comes from Warrior Films & Jumper Productions and centres around three teenage boys who break into their school swimming pool late one night, with tragic consequences whilst ‘The Crush’, directed by Michael Creagh and produced by Damon Quinn (Scapegoat), sees an eight year old schoolboy challenge his teacher’s fiancé to a duel. To the death. Both will screen as parts of the Shorts section of the festival on Wednesday, July 28th and Thursday, July 29th respectively.

The 6th Annual Traverse City Film Festival looks to bring films and filmmakers from around the world to Michigan. It annually receives over 80,000 admissions for 100 screenings with a special emphasis given to foreign films and films which have been overlooked but deserve the attention. The 6th Traverse City Festival will take place in Michigan from 27th of July to the 1st of August.
