Irish Shorts at Rushes Soho Shorts Fest
14 Jul 2010 :
The Pool
Both ‘The Pool’ from Thomas Hefferon (Loose Change) and ‘Cold Turkey’ by Gavin Keane have been officially selected to screen this year at the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival in the event’s International category. The title sequence from TG4 series ‘Na Cloigne’ has also been selected to compete at the festival in the Broadcast Design group. The festival runs from the 21st to the 31st of July.

The International group of shorts chosen by the Rushes Soho Shorts fest this year boasts two Irish projects, namely Thomas Hefferon’s ‘The Pool’ and Gavin Keane’s ‘Cold Turkey’. The first comes from Warrior Films & Jumper Productions and centres around three teenage boys who break into their school swimming pool late one night, with tragic consequences. The film recently had its world premiere at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival in New York, where it was selected as one of 45 short films in official competition from over 3,500 submitted films. ‘Cold Turkey‘, from Parallel Films, looks at the misadventures of a frustrated Foley artist, curious children and petrified poultry. The short has enjoyed previous success having won the Excellence in Cinematography Award at this year’s Amsterdam Film Festival.

The other international projects shortlisted include Australian short, ‘Terror on the Northside’, from Venetia Taylor and Aaron Dries; Switzerland/Serbia co-production ‘8’, from Acim Vasic; Romanian project ‘Once For The Money’, from Razvan Muraru and Spanish short ‘Jesusito De Mi Vida’, from Jesús Pérez-Miranda. There are twelve chosen International shorts in total.

Where the Broadcast Design Category is concerned the ‘Na Cloigne’ title sequence sees a nod for director Brian Williams. Brian’s brief when making the titles for the Bang/ROSG three-part supernatural thriller was “Creep them out before it’s even started”. Other nominees in the category include the opening titles for Channel 4’s ‘Misfits’ and the Winter Olympics title sequence alongside advertising campaigns such as Evian’s Skating Babies, Cadbury’s Gala Premiere and McDonald’s Little Tasters.

The festival, which is open to new and established filmmakers, awards a top prize and a Best Director prize in each of its six categories: Short Film, Animation, Documentary, Music Video, Newcomer and Broadcast Design, a new category which replaces the former Title Sequence and Idents category. The not-for-profit event will run, as mentioned above, from the 21st to the 31st of July in London. For a full list of nominees click here (PDF).
