The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), through its Arbitration and Mediation Center, has developed customised Mediation and Expedited Arbitration procedures for film and media disputes. Screen Producers Ireland and the Irish Film Board will host a launch of these rules in Galway on Thursday, July 8th.
The time frame and costs involved in film and media productions mean that disputes with production partners, participants and rights holders can have devastating effects on schedules and budgets. A breakfast briefing event will take place at 8am in the Radisson Hotel in Galway whereby an introduction of new procedures to combat the aforementioned problems will take place.
These new procedures look to offer a speedy, cost effective form of dispute resolution for the film and media sector, on both a national and international basis, facilitated by mediators and arbitrators with relevant industry expertise. Disputes arising from format use, co-production agreements, distribution deals and new media exploitation are just some of the areas where Irish producers – particularly those engaged in co-productions with overseas producers and financiers – will find the new WIPO procedures of direct relevance.
The new rules will be outlined by Ignacio de Castro, Deputy Director of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and a panel of industry partners will discuss arbitration and mediation in the film and media sector. The panel includes Paul Duggan, CEO of international collection society AGICOA, Sean Stokes, CEO of Screen Producers Ireland and James Bridgeman B.L., Arbitrator.
Anyone interested in attending the event (which is sponsored by Eugene F. Collins Solicitors) should e-mail Aoibhinn Maloney at amaloney@efc.ie as soon as possible. A schedule for the morning’s session is available at www.screenproducersireland.com
