Ryle Nugent is RTÉ Group Head of Sport

RTÉ has announced the appointment of Ryle Nugent to the position of RTÉ Group Head of Sport, following a public competition. He will be directly responsible for RTÉ Sport across all of its output areas – television, radio, publishing and news, with immediate effect.

Ryle, who has been Deputy Head of Television Sport since 2006, succeeds Glen Killane who has recently been appointed Managing Director of RTÉ Television. Cathal Goan, Director General of RTÉ said of the appointment that: ‘Delivering quality free-to-air coverage of national and international sporting events to the Irish public continues to be a priority for RTÉ as Ireland’s public service broadcaster. The audience is at the heart of everything we do and RTÉ Sport’s output across RTÉ Television, RTÉ Radio, News and RTÉ.ie is of the highest quality - something which our audience has recognised and continues to appreciate. Ryle’s appointment will ensure that both the audience and sports organisations will continue to reap all the benefits of multi-platform coverage that RTÉ is uniquely placed to offer.”

Ryle Nugent began working in RTÉ Television Sport in 1994 and has edited a wide range of sports programming. From 2000 to 2003 he was Executive Editor of ‘The Premiership’, also holding the position of Executive Editor of Rugby from 2001 to 2004. Ryle was Executive Editor of RTÉ TV’s coverage of World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004. He was appointed Commissioning Editor of RTÉ TV Sport in 2004 before becoming Deputy Head of TV Sport in 2006. The 39 year-old Dublin native began his career in Sports broadcasting in 1990 and has been a rugby commentator on RTÉ Television since 1999.

The newly appointed Group Head of Sport, Ryle Nugent is looking forward to his new role, saying: “I relish the challenge to consolidate RTÉ Sport’s position as the primary provider of free-to-air sports coverage in Ireland. In an increasingly competitive sports market and a challenging financial climate, RTÉ has managed to continue to deliver a wide range of sports to our audience. We’re passionate about delivering the best possible sports coverage to the Irish public and I very much look forward to working closely with the talented and hardworking staff across RTÉ Sport’s output areas, as well as with the rights organisations to ensure that sport continues to be showcased and promoted with top-quality coverage on all of RTÉ’s platforms.” Ryle’s replacement as Deputy Head of Television Sport is TBC.
