Eight World & 53 Irish Premieres for Galway 2010

The Galway Film Fleadh has unveiled the programme for its 22nd edition. The festival will feature eight world premieres, 53 Irish premieres, 100 feature films and 115 short films. Opening the festival on 6 July is ‘My Brothers’ with Oren Moverman’s ‘The Messenger’, which boasts an Oscar nominated performance from Woody Harrelson, closing proceedings on the 11th.

More international screenings include ‘El Secreto de Sus Ojos’ the 2010 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film; Giuseppe Capotondi’s mysterious thriller ‘The Double Hour’, the animated feature ‘The Illusionist’, which explores the relationship between an aged magician and a young girl and Lisa Cholodenko’s ‘The Kids are Allright’ which stars Annette Bening and Juliette Moore and was the most talked about film at the 2010 Sunday Film Festival.

With its popular First Feature award, the Fleadh has long been a desirable launch-pad for new Irish cinema and this year is no exception. Irish features include ‘Come On Eileen’, which stars Keith Allen and Noel Fielding of the Mighty Boosh fame; Ian Power’s ‘The Runway’, which recounts the story of a west Cork community coming together to help a Cuban pilot return home, and Carmel Winters’ ‘Snap’, a taut suspense filled psychological drama about three generations of family poised to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Other highlights include ‘Sensation’ which showcases the acting talent of Domhnall Gleeson; Alicia Duffy’s ‘All Good Children’, which premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Directors Fortnight, and Colm McCarthy’s ‘Outcast’. Lovers of thrillers can catch PJ Dillon’s feature directorial debut ‘Rewind’, while ‘Between the Canals’ follows the life of three inner city Dublin criminals.

In the documentary programme, titles screening include the Irish produced ‘The Pipe’, which describes the tensions of Rossport and the pressures and fractures within the Shell to Sea Campaign; ‘Steam of Life’ explores the cultural phenomenon of how Finnish men interact with each other in saunas; and ‘Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work’ looks at how the American icon deals with financial troubles. More Irish documentaries include ‘Counting Sheep’, by Galway-based filmmaker, Dieter Auner and the latest from leBrocquy Fraser Productions, ‘Burma Soldier’ which tells the story of a Burmese soldier who risks everything to become a pro democracy activist,

As previously announced, special international guests attending the Fleadh include actress Annette Bening, who will participate in a Public Interview at the city’s Town Hall Theatre; screenwriter Ronald Harwood and director Stephen Daldry.

Meanwhile, renowned Irish filmmaker, producer, journalist and activist, Lelia Doolan is to be the subject of the Irish Tribute and will take part in a special interview.
