Ballyfermot College of Further Education will be represented by four of its graduates at the 82nd Academy Awards, held in Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre on Sunday, March 7th. The annual awards ceremony sees nominations for the animation skills of former Ballyfermot College graduates Tomm Moore for ‘The Secret of Kells’; Darragh O’Connell and Nicky Phelan for their short ‘Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty’ and Richard Baneham for ‘Avatar’.

Tomm Moore’s feature length animation ‘The Secret of Kells’ is nominated for an Oscar in the category of Animated Feature Film. The film, which recently walked away with two IFTAs, sees a 12-year-old Brendan fighting Vikings and a serpent god to find a crystal and complete the legendary Book of Kells. The film was directed by Tomm (The Three Wise Men) and produced by Paul Young (Skunk Fu!) for Cartoon Saloon, the company Tomm co-founded. ‘The Secret of Kells’ also recently secured a wide release in the United States and is joined in its Oscar category by Universal’s ‘Coraline’, 20th Century Fox’s ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, Disney’s ‘The Princess and the Frog’ and Pixar’s ‘Up’.

Brown Bag Films’ ‘Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty’ is a six-minute film directed by Nicky Phelan, produced by Darragh O’Connell and written and performed by comedian Kathleen O’Rourke. The film tells the story of a seemingly sweet old lady who terrifies her little granddaughter at bedtime with her dark version of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale and has been nominated in the category of Short Film (Animation) at the Academy Awards. The animation previously won an Animation IFTA in 2009 and is nominated for an Oscar alongside Fabrice O. Joubert’s ‘French Roast’, Javier Recio Gracia’s ‘The Lady and the Reaper’, Nicolas Schmerkin’s ‘Logorama’ and Nick Park’s ‘A Matter of Loaf and Death’

Finally Richard Baneham, as Animation Supervisor for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, has seen his latest work receive a nomination in the category of Visual Effects. The BAFTA award winning team nominated includes Richard, Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum and Andrew R. Jones. The four will compete at the Academy Awards with the visual effects teams involved with ‘District 9’ and ‘Star Trek’.

The animation courses offered at Ballyfermot College include Animation Drawing Studies, the Higher National Diploma in Classical and Computer Animation and an Advanced Diploma in Animation / BA (Hons) in Animation. The college also offers Media and communication courses.
