Arts Council Reduces Funding Across the Board
02 Mar 2010 :
In the month of February the Arts Council announced over 350 funding decisions for 2010, an investment totaling just over €49 million. Within this figure all areas of the arts including literature, dance, theatre and music see a decrease in funding from last year’s allowances. The funding in the area of film decreased from €2,395,400 in 2009 to €2,018,200 for 2010.

On its website the Arts Council states that “In its overall approach, the Council sought to ensure that organisations can continue to bring the best of the arts to audiences across Ireland. Emphasis was given to achieving a regional balance, on enabling the arts to reach more people, and on supporting artists to make work.

“While the value of the allocations has decreased across the artforms, the relativity of allocation between the artforms (with the exception of Opera), has remained broadly similar to previous years,” it concludes.

In the current economic environment the Council has said it has €9 million less to invest in the arts than it had in 2009 and that, as such, it has not been possible to maintain the same level of funding to the same number of organisations as in the past. A number of organisations will cease to be funded under the three main grants programmes (Regularly Funded Organisations, Annual Funding and Annual Programming Grants).

Where film funding is concerned Access Cinema is to receive €127,500; Cinemobile will obtain €62,000; the Cork Film Centre/ C.A.V.E.R.N. ltd is to be given €75,000 and the Cork Film Festival will get €200,000.

Where Dublin groups are concerned Smithfield’s Darklight Film Festival has been granted €55,000; the Dublin International Film Festival will receive €87,500 and Filmbase has been allocated €300,000. The GAZE Film Festival is to be given €15,000 and the Irish Film Institute has been allocated €800,000.

Moving West, the Galway Film Centre has been given an allowance of €105,000 and the Galway Film Fleadh is to receive €175,000.
