RTÉ Secures UEFA EURO 2012 Rights
05 Feb 2010 :
RTÉ Sport has confirmed that it has added another major international sports event to its extensive portfolio by securing exclusive rights to the UEFA Euro 2012 Championships.

RTÉ has secured the broadcast rights for the 2012 European Championships, across television, radio and online, through an European Broadcasting Union (EBU) agreement which involves 36 countries broadcasting this event extensively on free-to-air television in addition to radio and internet platforms.

Exclusive Irish broadcast rights have been secured by RTÉ Television and RTÉ.ie while RTÉ Radio has been awarded national broadcast rights for the entire tournament. Coverage will include the live broadcast of all 31 matches from Poland and Ukraine in summer 2012.

UEFA has commented, saying, "UEFA is delighted to welcome RTÉ as a member of the exclusive group of UEFA EURO 2012™ official broadcasters. RTÉ is a leading broadcaster in Ireland and we are looking forward to developing together a unique viewing experience for the Irish audience.”

Glen Killane, Group Head of Sport for RTÉ, said "In an increasingly competitive market we are delighted to bring yet another major international sporting event to Irish viewers free-to-air. We are also particularly proud that RTÉ were a part of the EBU team that negotiated this agreement with UEFA. Ireland’s recent playoff against France rated as the third most watched programme of the decade and goes to show the huge public interest in major soccer tournaments such as this.”

RTÉ's team of soccer presenters, analysts and commentators will be on hand throughout the tournament providing their expert analysis and opinion free-to-air.

RTÉ Sport will broadcast live coverage of the qualifying draw from Warsaw, Poland this Sunday 7 February at 11.00am on RTÉ Two and streamed live on RTÉ.ie with the Republic of Ireland. Peter Collins will be joined live in studio by former Republic of Ireland Internationals Kenny Cunningham and Matt Holland for reaction on Ireland’s qualification hopes.
