Irish Actor Donal Donnelly Dies

Donal Donnelly Tweet ’The Dead’ star Donal Donnelly died yesterday, Monday, January 4th in Chicago. He was 78. The actor had been ill for some time prior to his passing. He was based in the U.S. for most of his adult life but was raised in Dublin and started his acting career by touring with Anew McMaster's Irish repertory company. He appeared on the stage of the Gate theatre before moving to America full-time where his stage roles included that of Gar in ‘Philadelphia, Here I Come’, Teddy in ‘Faith Healer’ and Milo Tindle in ‘Sleuth’. His many TV appearances include roles in ‘Law and Order’, ‘ITV Playhouse’ and ‘DDU’. He is best known in the film industry for his portrayal of Freddy Malins in John Huston’s ‘The Dead’ and he also appeared in Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Godfather: Part III', ‘Twister’ and ‘This is my Father’. He is survived by his wife, Patsy, and two sons. Martin Cullen TD Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism expressed his sympathy today on learning of the actors death: “Indeed, Donal Donnelly had a very successful career in film, including starring in Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Godfather: Part III' and John Huston's 'The Dead'. Born in England, he was in fact a great ambassador for Ireland having grown up and been educated in Dublin. He received great praise for his work in the United States and in many ways was one of the first of the Irish success stories which today we continue to enjoy in the world of international film. I extend my sympathy to his wife Patsy and both his sons.
