Factual Series ‘The Big Story’ to Air on RTÉ

Charlie Bird Tweet A new six part RTÉ factual series, featuring Irish journalists discussing some of the major stories of their careers, is to commence this Sunday, 19 July, on RTÉ One at 7.00p.m. Some journalists featured in the new series include; Charlie Bird, Nell McCafferty, John Waters, Maggie O’Kane, Brenda Power and Tom McCaughren. Each of the reporters offer their views on national and international news reports and discuss some of the major stories that defined their careers including Charlie Bird's coverage of Fr. Niall O'Brien's arrest in the Philippines and Nell McCafferty's reporting on the Kerry Babies Case. The series was produced and directed by David Whelan and Trish O Connor for RTÉ. After six weeks preparation and research conducted by the producer/director duo and Aoife Rickard, the documentary was shot in both Dublin and London over another six week period. Director of photography was Ronan Lee. Liz Walshe edited the series in RTÉ spending six weeks putting the final touches to the series. The documentary explores how today’s celebrity obsessed world has meant that some reporters have become bigger than the stories they tell. The first episode commences this Sunday with RTÉ reporter Charlie Bird chronicling how the journalist has become a household name.
