21st Galway Film Fleadh Programme Unveiled | The Irish Film & Television Network

Opening this year’s festival on July 7 will be Patricia Riggen’s ‘Under the Same Moon’ which tells the heart breaking story of nine year old Carlos who is left behind in Mexico as his mother works in the US in order to give Carlos a better chance in life. The Festival will close on July 12 with ‘Fish Tank’, director Andrea Arnold’s latest feature, which stars IFTA winning actor Michael Fassbender who will also be attending the screening.

Eight World Premieres will be screened at this year’s Fleadh including; ‘Zonad’ the latest film by ‘Once’ director John Carney; ‘The Disturbed’, an epic thriller; Irish coming of age drama ‘The Race’, which tells the story of a young girl who wants to be a rally diver; ‘His and Hers’, Ken Wardrop’s first feature film; Irish director Brendan Muldowney’s debut feature ‘Savage’, a horror film which is not for the faint hearted; ‘Swansong’ a poignant film about illegitimacy; Conor Horgan’s ‘One Hundred Mornings’, a film about survival, and ‘Memoria’, which tells the tale of a young couple who struggle to deal with strange occurrences which keep happening on their honeymoon.

There is a special screening of comedy films selected by well known stand up comedians Des Bishop, Maeve Higgins, Ardal O’Hanlon and Neil Delamere who have chosen their funniest film of all time.

In addition, the festival will screen an array of international feature films including; ‘Adventureland’, ‘Baraboo’, ‘Frozen River’, ‘Amreeka’ and documentaries including; ‘The Cove’, ‘Tibet in Song’ and ‘The Red Tail’. ‘Fathers of Girls’, which stars Ray Winstone, portrays the unconditional love a father has for his daughter will be screened at the festival where Ray Winstone will be in attendance. ‘American Violet’, which is based on true events in the US 2000 General Elections, will also appear on the programme for festival screenings.

‘Na Coisithe- Ar Thóir Mo Sheanathar’ is a personal portrait of Liam S Gógann, one of the leading poets of the Irish language revival, while ‘Sweet Crude’ is the story of the Niger Delta in Nigeria. A panel discussion entitled Power Struggle will take place after the screening and will establish whether parallels exist between the Niger Delta and Rossport in Mayo.

The Galway festival will screen over 100 shorts, several of which will compete for the following awards; Best Short Drama Tiernan McBride Award, Best Short Documentary, Best Short Animation, Best Debut Short Drama and Best Debut Short Animation.

Also attending the festival will be award winning actress Anjelica Huston who will participate in the Public Interview in the Town Hall Theatre on Sunday July 12; Michael Fassbender; who will give the Actor’s Masterclass, acclaimed international Producer Ted Hope; who will give the Producers Masterclass; and renowned screenwriter Christopher Hampton, who will give the Screenwriters Masterclass. The Festival will also pay tribute to Redmond Morris, a prolific Irish producer, who will take part in a special interview in the Cinemobile in Galway on Saturday July 11.
