Irish actress Elaine Cassidy stars as Abby Mills in the CBS drama ‘Harpers Island’, which debuted on Irish television this week. Cassidy, who last year starred in RTÉ’s ‘Little White Lie’, appears alongside US actor Christopher Gorham (Ugly Betty) in the series.
The 13 episode drama is a murder mystery set on a secluded island off the coast of Seattle where past and present residents have gathered for a wedding celebration, however, amongst the guests is a serial killer who manages to kill a character off in every episode.
For the Kilcoole native ‘Harpers Island’ is a completely new genre, not only in subject matter but also in the type of role which she plays - portraying an American for the first time in her career. Cassidy prepared for the role by researching screenwriters, authors and the craft of writing all the while dealing with Abby’s abandonment issues.
The show’s creators kept the cast in the dark about who was going to be killed off in each episode, believing that this approach would add to drama and tension on set whilst filming. Commenting in the LA Times.com about the anticipation and suspense which this created, Cassidy said that it “was really exciting because it was just we were kind of living our characters to a certain extent, we knew our back stories and then it slowly unfolded. We were the audience while we were filming as well, which I thought was really interesting.”
‘Harpers Island’ is currently airing on RTÉ Two, Mondays at 10.20pm
