Director/Photographer Kevin Abosch is set to begin production on his second feature project this year, ‘Tartuffe’, an Irish production of Molière’s classic French stage-play.
Abosch, who recently wrapped photography on his debut feature ‘Vena’, plans to begin shooting the comic tale at the end of July. In what the director calls "a contemporary abstraction of the original work with Tartuffe re-imagined as a spiritual guru,” the film is a direct adaptation of the stage-play with a contemporary Irish setting.
The original 1664 tale, set in Paris, tells the story of Orgon who falls under the influence of Tartuffe, a scheming hypocrite, who pretends to be pious and speak with divine authority.
“It’s a great story,” Abosch tells IFTN. “Setting it in Ireland is a rather irreverent idea. It’s going to be completely contemporary and, even though I hate to use the saying, it’s interesting in a post-Celtic Tiger era, a tale like this.”
The Irish/French co-production is independently funded with a budget of approx €2/3 million. Abosch will produce, direct and DOP ‘Tartuffe’ using a proprietary HD camera that he has designed in collaboration with Sony. The filmmaker is also a successful photographer having photographed some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Johnny Depp and Cameron Diaz.
