Photography is to commence on ‘Vincent: Questioning The Method’ a character study of painter Vincent Van Gogh by Irish actor Stuart Dunne (The Van) with filming to begin on 20th May until 30th July in and around the town of Portlaoise.
The film will be based on painter Van Gogh who, having arrived in the small French town of Auvers-sur-Oise on the 20th May, 1890, painted profusely for seventy days creating over eighty-nine finished oil paintings, as well as countless sketches and watercolors. He also wrote almost daily to his associates and family, but mostly to his brother Theo. These letters provide an in depth historical first hand account from which actor Stuart Dunne will draw for the character study.
For the project, Dunne, a practicing artist as well as an actor, will focus on recreating Van Gogh's workload; painting at least one painting for each of the days he is in character from his own experience and perspective. These works will be originals and not recreations.
At the end of the seventy days, there will be a public wake followed by a week long Arts and Culture Festival in conjunction with 'The Magnet Festival', hosted by the town of Portlaoise. The works Stuart creates during the project will be exhibited during the festival, and will provide a focus for the theme of some of the other events taking place during the week.
Directed by John Karabetsos the study will be documented by a film crew 24/7 for the duration, and will yield both web content and eventually a documentary feature. Portlaoise and the surrounding areas will be the main location for the shoot with one weekend shooting in a Dublin apartment.
