The Arts Council and Minister Martin Cullen have expressed their regret at the passing of the award winning actress Anna Manahan, who died at the weekend at the age of 84.
Born in Waterford City, Anna had played numerous roles in theatre, television and film. Her television credits included ‘Fair City’, ‘The Clinic’ ‘Black Day at Black Rock’ 'The Riordans' and 'The Irish RM', while her film work saw her taking on roles in ‘Ulysses’(1967), ‘The Viking Queen’(1967) and in John Carney’s ‘On the Edge’ (2001).
Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism expressed his sympathy on hearing of the actress’s death in saying:
“When people talk about great influential Irish actresses they talk of Anna Manahan. That is a testament to her talent. The way she shared her talent and creative spirit with others was one of her greatest gifts to all of us during the course of her life.”
Pat Moylan, Chairman of the Arts Council said: "The Council is deeply saddened at the passing of Anna Manahan. Anna was a consummate professional, with the art of theatre acting in her bones. Her work brought pleasure to audiences throughout Ireland and the world, and she will be sadly missed by all of her colleagues and friends in Irish theatre."
Ms. Manahan received a Tony Award nomination in 1969 for her role in the Broadway production of Brian's Friel's ‘Lovers’ and won a Tony in 1998 for her part as Mag in Martin McDonagh's 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane'. She was granted the Freedom of Waterford city in 2002.
