Carson appointed RTÉs Director of Programmes

02 Feb 2009 :
RTÉ Television has appointed independent producer Steve Carson as the new Director of Programmes. Carson takes up his new role in a week's time.

As Director of Programmes, Carson will report to the Managing Director of Television Noel Curran and will have overall responsibility for the origination, management and delivery of RTÉ's home-produced programmes, both in-house and commissioned, across both RTÉ One and RTÉ Two.

Belfast born Carson will also be a key member of the RTÉ Television Management Board responsible for managing and organising all aspects of the Television IBD (Integrated Business Division). He takes up his new role in a week's time.

Carson has previously worked for the BBC in London and in 2000, he set up the independent production company, Mint, with his wife broadcaster Miriam O'Callaghan.

Mint has produced critically-acclaimed documentary series and one-off factual programmes including ‘Haughey’, ‘Surgeons’, ‘Our Lady's’, ‘Fine Gael: A Family At War’, and ‘Unit 8’ and is currently nominated for two IFTAs for their doc series ‘Bertie’ and ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’

Commenting on the new appointment, Noel Curran, MDTV said: "Steve Carson's track record as a creative programme-maker and team leader speaks for itself. He has worked for RTÉ and in the independent television production sector. He has delivered landmark programming of the highest quality over the past decade. At this particular time, perhaps more than ever, it is very important that RTÉ continues to emphasise what makes us different to our competitors. Steve has a huge commitment to public service broadcasting and has demonstrated that he understands what Irish audiences require of the national broadcaster."

The new Director of Programmes, Television has said: "RTÉ is Ireland's largest creative organisation, and I'm privileged to have the opportunity to lead our programme makers in continuing to deliver the full range of home-produced, high-quality material for our audience."
