Actor Max von Sydow (The Exorcist) has been added to the cast of ‘The Tudors’ for the Showtime series' third season currently shooting in Ardmore Studios.
Swedish born von Sydow will play Cardinal Von Waldburg, a German-born clergyman who tries to organize the defeat of Henry VIII, played by IFTA winning actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
Best known to audiences for his role as Father Merrin in the original horror film 'The Exorcist', von Sydow’s credits also include ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (1965), ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’ (1986) and ‘Minority Report’ (2002).
The actor is also one of the few actors to receive an Oscar nomination for a role in a foreign language film for the Swedish produced ‘Pelle the Conqueror’ (1987). Next year he is mooted to appear alongside Leonardo Di Caprio in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Shutter Island’
Von Sydow will be seen in four of the eight season-three episodes of the IFTA winning series. Other recent additions to the cast of the Emmy nominated show include British singer Joss Stone, who will play Henry VIII's fourth wife, Anne of Cleves.
The second series of ‘The Tudors’ is currently airing on TV3 on Tuesdays at 10.00pm.
