The Cork Film Festival has announced the opening film for the 2006 festival is Gabriel Range’s controversial feature ‘Death Of A President’. The acclaimed film was the recent winner of the FIPRESCI Critics Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
‘Death Of A President’ uses the central premise of the assassination of George W. Bush to explore what might happen to America if such an event were to occur. The mock documentary caused a stir in the US following its North American premiere at Toronto and is likely to insight similar debate after its European premiere in Cork next month.
Cork Film Festival Director, Mick Hannigan said of the film: “This is urgent, important cinema, raising vital questions about politics and the mass media, about liberty and democracy. It confirms the importance of cinema as a means of making sense of the world. For us it is the perfect opening film.”
Financed by Channel 4, the film was co-produced by Irish producer Ed Guiney. He said “Death of a President is a great cinematic achievement and we are excited to be screening it before a large audience in Cork. Mick and his team at the Cork Film Festival have been huge supporters of our films and we have had both Magdalene Sisters and Disco Pigs as opening night film in the past.”
Director Gabriel Range and its producers Simon Finch (who co-wrote the script with Range) and Ed Guiney will be in Cork for the gala screening of the film which takes place at 8.30pm in the Cork Opera House on October 8th.
The Cork Film Festival runs from October 8-15. The full programme of events will be announced later this week.
Tickets for all events and screenings will be available from September 30 on www.corkfilmfest.org and in the Festival Box Office which is located in Kelly’s Post Office, 15 Grand Parade Cork.
