Seven weeks of principal photography is underway in Dublin and Cork on "Disco Pigs", a "twisted rites of passage story" starring Elaine Cassidy ("Felicia's Journey") and Cillian Murphy ("The Smiling Suicide Club", "The Trench"). Funny, sexual and violent, "Disco Pigs" is written by Enda Walsh and marks the feature film debut of director Kirsten Sheridan, who received the Film Institute of Ireland / Guinness Outstanding Young Irish Talent Award in 1998.
Ed Guiney ("The Smiling Suicide Club", "Sweety Barrett", "Guiltrip") produces "Disco Pigs" through his independent production company Temple Films. Financed by London based Renaissance Films and the Irish Film Board, Renaissance is handling worldwide sales and distribution.
The stage version of "Disco Pigs" premiered at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 1996, where it won Best Production. In 1997 it went on to enjoy resounding success at the Edinburgh Festival and received the Scotland on Sunday Critic's Award and the Stewart Parker and George Devine Awards. Since touring the UK in 1998 to critical acclaim, "Disco Pigs" has been staged in over 17 other countries.
The film also features Irish actors, Brian O'Byrne (Barry Levinson's Everlasting Piece, The Fifth Province), Geraldine O'Rawe (Ressurection Man, Some Mother's Son, Circle of Friends), Eleanor Methven (A Love Divided, The Boxer), Marie Mullen (Dancing at Lughnasa, The Butcher Boy & Tony Award Winner 1998 for Beauty Queen of Leenane) and Dawn Bradfield (Pete's Meteor, Dancing at Lughnasa & Tony nominated 1999 for The Lonesome West).
