Tommy Tiernan is set to become the latest Irish comedian to create and star in a new sitcom for Sky 1.
The move comes hot on the heels of the success of ‘Moone Boy’, an Irish sitcom created by ‘Bridesmaids’ star, Chris O’ Dowd.
Tiernan was offered the deal after he wrote and starred in an episode of ‘Little Crackers’ on Sky 1. The episode aired in December and was a ratings triumph for the channel.
Its success prompted head of comedy Lucy Lumsden and comedy commissioner Saskia Schuster to ask Tiernan to develop the six-part series.
Tiernan will play the main role in the series about a psychiatric patient who is sent home to live with his mother. He has also hinted at other characters including a bed-ridden father and body-building brother.
Although best known for his stand-up comedy, Tiernan has other television credits to his name. He previously starred in the 1999 Channel 4 sitcom, 'Small Potatoes', about an underachiever who works in a video shop.
He also starred in a memorable 'Father Ted' episode as Fr. Kevin, a depressed priest who is miraculously cured by “The Theme from Shaft” but relapses after hearing the Radiohead song “Exit Music (For a Film).
The as yet un-named sitcom will begin filming in Co. Meath later in the year.
