Irish directors, actors and crew have been shortlisted for the 2009 Primetime Emmy® Awards. Announced Thursday, 16 July, the nominations include multiple nods for ‘The Tudors’, with Dearbhla Walsh, Thaddeus O’Sullivan, Consolata Boyle, Gabriel Byrne and Brendan Gleeson also in the running.
Receiving a total of five Emmy nominations, the Irish crew for ‘The Tudors’ will be celebrating their third consecutive year of nominations from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. A winner in 2007 and 2008, Costume Designer Joan Bergin and Wardrobe supervisor Susan O'Connor Cave have once again been nominated in the Outstanding Costumes For A Series category.
In the Outstanding Art Direction For A Single-Camera Series category, the Irish team of Production Designer Tom Conroy, Art Director Colman Corish and Set Director Crispian Sallis are nominated alongside their counterparts working on the US series ‘Bones’, ‘Heroes’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Pushing Daisies’ and ‘True Blood’.
Irish casting agents Nuala Moiselle and Frank Moiselle have been named alongside their US colleagues for their casting work on the Showtime series which is filmed entirely on location in Ireland. IFTA winning Hair Stylist Dee Corcoran and DOP Ousama Rawi have also been nominated for their work behind the scenes.
Irish director Dearbhla Walsh, who is currently filming the latest series of ‘The Tudors’ in Dublin, has been shortlisted for her work on the BBC drama ‘Little Dorrit’. The period drama is one of the hottest tips for this year’s Awards having garnered a total of 11 nominations.
'Into the Storm' has a total of 14 nominations, including three for Irish nominees Thaddeus O'Sullivan, Consolata Boyle and Brendan Gleeson; Irish director Thaddeus O’Sullivan is among the nominees for Outstanding Directing For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Dramatic Special for his work on the HBO drama, which followed the post-war life of Winston Churchill. Consolate Boyle (The Queen) is nominated for her work on 'Into the Storm' as costume designer. Actor Brendan Gleeson receives his first Emmy nomination for his performance as Winston Churchill in ‘Into the Storm’ in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie category.
Irish born actor Kenneth Branagh is also named among the nominees for this category for his role in ‘Wallander: One Step Behind’. Gleeson and Branagh face competition from Kiefer Sutherland (24), Kevin Kline (Cyrano de Bergerac), Sir Ian McKellen (King Lear) and Kevin Bacon (Taking Chance).
Both ‘Little Dorrit’ and ‘Into the Storm’ are in the running for top awards on the night including Outstanding Miniseries and Outstanding Made for Television movie respectively.
‘In Treatment’ star Gabriel Byrne has been nominated for a second year running for his role as Paul in the acclaimed HBO drama – which is screened on Irish station TV3. Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Hugh Laurie (House), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Simon Baker (The Mentalist) are also shortlisted for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series.
The winners of the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced on Sunday, September 20, with the Creative Arts Emmys held the week before on September 12.
