Galway County stretches from the region of Connemara in the west to the banks of the River Shannon in the east. Co. Galway is the second largest county in Ireland. The population of the county is approximately 180,000 people. The land mass area of the county is 6,148km². Bog and rich farming land extend east and north-east of Galway City. Connemara, in the west, is an area of stony barren ground.

Galway city is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland and the only city in the province of Connacht in Ireland. It is situated 217 km from Dublin, 206 km from Cork, 88 km from Shannon, and 269 km from Rosslare.
