Madys mother, who has six children, dies at her wedding reception following a miscarriage. This event generates in Mady a fear of sex and pregnancy. When she returns home with her husband Joe, she wards off his sexual advances; his frustration increases and he forces himself on her, which causes Mady to return home. Again she tries to solve her dilemma, the doctor suggesting she should take the pill while the priest prohibiting such a move. Distressed and confused she attempts suicide and is hospitalized. Joe comes to visit, and Mady realizes her love for him will allow her to overcome her sexual fears.
