Two Year Course (Friday, 29th November) Creative Media Practice-Based/Traditional Masters by Research in DKIT
Go »

The Section of Creative Media in DKIT would like to hear from interested industry professionals and recent third-level graduates who wish to pursue a Masters By Research in the Creative Media area, which can include a practice-based and/or a traditional research project.

The Masters by Research is usually taken on a two-year basis and in order to enroll, a prospective student would submit a proposal for a research topic with which they would wish to engage for that period, during which time they would have weekly meetings with an appointed supervisor and agree key deadlines for deliverables. This proposal would be validated by the DKIT School of Informatics & Creative Arts Postgraduate Programme Board and QQI (Quality & Qualifications Ireland) prior to commencement.

As above, these proposals can include both traditional written research and practice–based research elements. Research workshops/seminars etc. will also take place across the 2-year period.

The Section of Creative Media in DKIT is leading the way in practice-based research in the Creative Media Industries, having introduced a practice-based research module at undergraduate level in the BA (Hons) in Video & Film Production add-on honours degree (see www.dkit.ie/filmhons) some years ago. Recent projects on this year-long module have included:

- Representations of Women in films about the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland;

- Portrayals of Irish Society on Irish Television in the last 50 years;

- Masculinity in Contemporary Irish Cinema;

- An Investigation into the Effect of Video Games on Contemporary Film-Making.

All of the above have also included the creation of short films as part of the project’s research and deliverables. ‘Eimear’, a short film created as part of the ‘Representations of Women in films about the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland’ project, has already been screened at numerous film festivals throughout Ireland, including the Kerry Film Festival, the Dublin International Short Film and Music Festival, along with winning the Best Student Film at the Underground Cinema Film Festival in Dublin recently.

The Section of Creative Media in DKIT is housed within the state-of-the-art Carrolls building on the DKIT Campus, only a 50min drive from Dublin. The facilities include a HD TV studio, 40-seater cinema, radio studio, dark room, edit lab & suites, sound recording facilities & multimedia labs - see https://vimeo.com/60548674 for a show-reel of our facilities.

For more information, please contact Sarah McCann, Head of Section of Creative Media at sarah.mccann@dkit.ie or 042-9370285.

In addition, please see https://www.dkit.ie/research-office/graduates

Funding may be available, dependent on applicant’s status and /or necessary application procedures etc. under various schemes operated by Susi (http://www.susi.ie/) and the Irish Research Council (http://www.research.ie/), along with internal funding for DKIT graduates.

Go »
This seminar will focus on honing analysis skills for development personnel, producers and directors who have attended the seminar the Inside Story seminar. It is recommended that participants also attend the Mythological Archetypes in Storytelling Seminar. The course will improve the ability to breakdown a script and give more effective story notes. While a script will ultimately be critiqued by the public when it is produced, the best development notes are those that can be as objective as possible, striving to interpret rather than judge. This allows the analyst to serve as a mirror, reflecting back to the writer what is working and what isn’t as it relates to the deep nature of the story. Utilizing the dynamics of the transformational arc, the course will share powerful new tools to help navigate the many layers of story structure and locate script issues at their source. This takes the guesswork out of identifying story issues and, therefore, strengthens the ability to communicate with writers at a deeper, more insightful level to help them fulfil their creative vision.

The deadline for course application is 8th November 2013.
