Sony Pictures Classics buys Wicked Little Letters following TIFF Debut

Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman in Wicked Little Letters
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the North American rights to Wicked Little Letters, starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.

Following the film’s recent world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the North American rights to Wicked Little Letters. The film is directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You), and stars Olivia Coleman (The Favourite) and Jessie Buckley (Fingernails).

Based on a stranger than fiction true story, Wicked Little Letters follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss, begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

In a statement, Sony Pictures Classics said “Wicked Little Letters not only showcases great actors at the peak of their comedic form but also provides the kind of fun, rich entertainment audiences hunger for now more than ever.”

The film was written by Jonny Sweet (Chickens, Greed). The supporting cast includes Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts, Killing Eve), Alisha Weir (Matilda!), Timothy Spall (Mr Turner, Spencer), Joanna Scanlan (After Love, Notes On A Scandal), Hugh Skinner (Fleabag, W1A, Mamma Mia), Malachi Kirby (Small Axe, Anansi Boys), Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones trilogy), Lolly Adefope (Ghosts), and Eileen Atkins (The Crown).

Blueprint Pictures (The Banshees of Inisherin, Emma) produce alongside South of the River Pictures (Landscapers) and Jo Wallett (Catherine Called Birdy, Emma). Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh, EVP Global Production Ron Halpern and SVP Global Production Joe Naftalin executive produce for Studiocanal. Daniel Battsek, Ollie Madden and Farhana Bhula are executive producing for FILM4, with People Person Pictures’ Jonny Sweet and Simon Bird also on board as executive producers.

Wicked Little Letters will be released in Irish cinemas from Friday 23rd February, 2024.
