Check Out the Full Programme for the 16th IFI Documentary Festival
26 Sep 2018 :
The 16th IFI Documentary Film Festival will open tonight at the Irish Film Institute with a screening of Bing Liu's award-winning documentary ‘Minding the Gap’. Over the next five days, the very best of new non-fiction filmmaking from Ireland, Australia, Hungary, Russia, Spain and Palestine will take centre stage, as the IFI welcomes a number of special guests to take part in panel discussions and Q&As.

International guests scheduled to appear include Steven Eastwood, director of the critically-acclaimed ‘Island’, which examines the final year in the life of four patients in a hospice on the Isle of Wight; Almudena Carracedo, co-director of Sheffield Doc/Fest Grand Jury Prize winner ‘The Silence of Others’; and Bernadett Tuza-Ritter, director of the unforgettable ‘A Woman Captured’, which focuses on a Hungarian woman trapped in domestic servitude.

Irish highlights of the festival will include the world premiere of Marcus Robinson's ‘An Engineer Imagines’, alongside Anna Frances Ewert's ‘Lovers of the Night’, and sold-out screenings of Ross Whitaker's ‘Katie’ and Frank Shouldice's charming ‘The Man Who Wanted to Fly’

Other Irish documentaries to screen include Brian Hill and Niamh Kennedy's ‘The Life After’, Brian Lally's ‘The Curious Works of Roger Doyle’, Tom Burke's ‘Losing Alaska’, and Keith Walsh's ‘When All Is Ruin Once Again’. Saturday afternoon will see the return of our ever-popular programme of Irish Shorts, kindly supported by Screen Scene, featuring new work from Jamie Goldrick, Hugh Rodgers, Paul Power, Mia Mullarkey, Sean Mullan, Luke Brabazon, Paddy Cahill and Maurice O'Brien.

Friday lunchtime will see a panel discussion in association with Screen Producers Ireland (SPI) examining the current state of documentary filmmaking in Ireland, with contributors including Ciarán Kissane of the BAI, James Hickey of Screen Ireland, Sean Mac Giolla Phadraig of RTÉ Factual, Siobhán Ward from Crossing the Line Films, Cormac Hargaden of Loose Horse (‘The Man Who Wanted to Fly’), and Loren Syer Willoughby from Off the Fence Distribution. The event will be hosted by Laura Slattery of The Irish Times.

Individual screening tickets are €11, excluding the opening film which includes a post-show reception (€15). A special ticket package is available in person only from the IFI Box Office: 5 films for €45. Tickets for the Documentary Filmmaking Panel Discussion cost €5.
