Special Feature: Industry Discusses Irish Language TV
02 Sep 2010 | With the launch of Irish broadcasters’ Autumn schedules IFTN spoke with broadcasters and producers of Irish language programmes to get their (often varying) take on the current issues facing programmes in our native tongue. 
Abrahamson, O'Conor & Gildea Teaching at Filmbase
02 Sep 2010 | Filmbase Training is planning its busiest autumn ever: launching several brand new courses and hosting talks and seminars with industry experts from home and abroad. After building on six years of success as an Apple Training Centre, Filmbase has also recently added several Adobe Certified Courses to their range of professional industry training. The upcoming speakers and tutors include make up artist Terri Pinnell (Portrait of a Zombie), actor Hugh O’Conor (My Left Foot), casting director Thyrza Ging (Savage) and directors Lenny Abrahamson (Adam and Paul) and Sonya Gildea (Bua). 
Tyrell & Apple ‘Making the Grade’
02 Sep 2010 | September 22nd, 23rd & 24th will play host to three individual free one day courses entitled ‘Making the Grade’. The grading course, from Tyrell CCT in association with Apple, will give established FCP editors with a limited knowledge of online and finishing techniques the opportunity to learn key techniques to improve "the look" and output quality of their programs and VTs ready for transmission. 
Interview: Graham Linehan Revisits Craggy Island
01 Sep 2010 | In a time when gross-out comedies are the safe option for most writers Graham Linehan insists on creating what he calls ‘Inclusive Comedy’. This is humour that won’t have various family members running for the kettle as a result of unrelenting awkwardness; rather it seeks to find the comedic heart in normally taboo subjects. IFTN spoke with the man who has brought us the three best known members of the Irish parochial community to see what audiences can expect from the upcoming ‘Father Ted’ documentary, his various ways of writing sitcoms and what his favourite ‘Father Ted’ episode is. 
Green Inc Going 'Live' and 'Daily'
31 Aug 2010 | Green Inc Film & Television has gone into production with ‘Four Live’ and ‘The Daily Show’ – shows that will broadcast in what was the slot of the group’s previous lifestyle magazine show ‘The Afternoon Show’ on RTÉ. The company is also in production with ‘The Many faces of…Richard Wilson’ for the BBC. 
Graham Linehan ‘In Conversation with…’ IFTA
26 Aug 2010 | The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) is to host an In Conversation With… event today Thursday, August 26th which will centre around the work of Irish writer, director and actor Graham Linehan. 
Festival Roundup: Queen’s Festival Lineup & Clones Calls for Shorts
26 Aug 2010 | The Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s takes place from the 15th to the 30th of October and will see film events running that will look to celebrate the work of Monthy Python, John Lennon and Hong Sangsoo amongst others. Further south the Clones Film Festival is inviting applications from short filmmakers to take part in a short film competition that will run as part of this year’s event. 
Interview: Stokes Passing SPI Torch to Galavan
26 Aug 2010 | Sean Stokes’ handed over the role of CEO of the Screen Producers Ireland (SPI) to Barbara Galavan on Tuesday, August 24th. Having come to the end of his term as CEO Stokes has taken up his new position as MD of Sports and Media Rights International Ltd. IFTN spoke to both Sean and Barbara to talk about the Stokes’ time with the producers representative group and the challenges now facing Barbara. 
Interview: Niall McKay Talks San Fran Irish Film Fest
26 Aug 2010 | Niall McKay founded the San Francisco Irish Film Festival in 2004. The festival, which takes place this year from the 23rd to the 25th of September, looks to present the best in contemporary Irish cinema, celebrating everything from features to documentaries to Irish language films. IFTN talked to the festival’s founder and filmmaker about the running of the event and the changing face of Irish film. 
Barbara Galavan is New SPI Chief
25 Aug 2010 | The Board of Screen Producers Ireland has announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive, Barbara Galavan. Barbara replaces Sean Stokes who is leaving to head up Sports and Media Rights International Ltd a company providing advice and solutions for sports and media rights consumers. 
Shimmy Marcus Introduces 'Soul Boy'
20 Aug 2010 | The first weekend in September will see the release of two new productions from Irish writer/director Shimmy Marcus (Headrush). September 3rd marks the long-awaited release of his Northern Soul feature 'Soul Boy' across screens in UK & Ireland, whilst new comedy series 'Mattie' starring Pat Shortt which Shimmy helmed debuts on RTÉ1 on September 5th. 
'Pyjama Girls' Returns to IFI, Still Films in Spotlight
20 Aug 2010 | ‘Pyjama Girls’, Maya Derrington’s new feature documentary will return to the IFI for an exclusive release today, August 20th. The project looks to capture the ups and downs of working class teenage life behind the enigmatic and subversive statement of wearing pyjamas in public. Still Films’ recent work will be further marked with the world premiere of Paul Rowley’s experimental feature, ‘The Rooms’ and his documentary ‘Seaview’. Finally Tuesday, August 24th will see a ‘Still Films in Conversation’ event take place where all three projects will be discussed. 
TV3 Unveils Autumn Schedule & Three Year Plan for Production
19 Aug 2010 | TV3 today launched its autumn schedule of programming. The broadcaster reported that home produced programming will increase by 10% to 40%, with a three year aim to exceed 50%. The schedule will be formally launched on air on ‘Ireland AM’ live from Galway on Friday August 20th 
Interview: John Murphy Talks Rapid Scriptwriting
19 Aug 2010 | Cork born scriptwriter John Murphy has been writing scripts for quiz shows, reality shows and soaps since his unlikely big break as a detective with a sense of humour. He spoke to IFTN about an elaborate police investigation to find Bob Monkhouse’s jokes, his ‘Perfect Match’ with Twink and how ‘Bilko’ is essentially the same as ‘Frasier’. 
Dáithi Welcomes Roses to His Kingdom
19 Aug 2010 | The 51st International Rose of Tralee Selection will be broadcast live from the festival dome on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th August. This year Dáithí O Sé will present the popular live television event for the first time and will interview 32 roses over the two nights. Last year a peak of 885,000 viewers tuned in to see Charmaine Kenny crowned as the 51st Rose of Tralee. 
RTÉ Seeks Deputy Director of Programmes
17 Aug 2010 | RTÉ is currently inviting applications for the post of Deputy Director of Programmes in its Television department. The Deputy Director of Programmes plays a key role in the origination, management and delivery of RTÉ’s home-produced programmes, both in-house and commissioned. The outgoing deputy, Mary Curtis begins her new role of Director of Digital Switchover in September. 
Dublin ‘Must be the Place’ as Sorrentino Shoot Starts
16 Aug 2010 | Cameras start rolling today, Monday August 16th on the set of ‘This Must Be the Place’. The feature marks Italian director Paolo Sorrentino's English feature debut and will shoot on location in Dublin for the next three weeks. The film stars Oscar-winners Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River), Frances McDormand (Fargo), and musician David Byrne, alongside Irish talent Simon Delaney (Zonad, Happy Ever Afters), Olwen Fouere (Space Truckers) and newcomer Eve Hewson. 
NI Screen Seek Screenwriters for Fest Sponsorship
16 Aug 2010 | Northern Ireland Screen is sponsoring 10 writers to attend this year’s London Screenwriters' Festival from the 29th to the 31st of October. The event is an opportunity to get access to top names attending the festival and spend a few days networking with other writers, producers and commissioners. Applications are now being received by Northern Ireland Screen for ten full festival passes. 
Interview: Brown Bag Films Move into Features
12 Aug 2010 | 16 years ago Cathal Gaffney and Darragh O’Connell founded Brown Bag Films. In a pre-digital era the pair set up the studios as a means of making their own films. The group was founded at a time when Ireland has the biggest animation industry in Europe with the ironic fact that none of the studios here were Irish-owned. The company has since moved from its hand-drawn and painted beginnings to boast a staff of 57 in its Dublin studios which are equipped with a state of the art High Definition picture and Audio post production facilities. Furthermore the group has, as of July this year, a new Hollywood-based office. IFTN caught up with co-founder and managing director Cathal Gaffney to talk about the future of the company and Irish animation as a whole. 
Delaney & Ingleby Visit 'Every Second Sunday'
12 Aug 2010 | Hubbard and Banks Media goes into production with short film ‘Every Second Sunday’ this weekend. Starring Simon Delaney (Zonad) and Lee Ingleby (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) it will shoot in Dublin and Bray. Simon Hubbard (Jack) is the writer/director of the project with Fergal O'Hanlon (Yu Ming is Ainm Dom) on board as director of photography.
