Background:

Dun Laoghaire Further Education Institute (formerly DCFE), Cumberland St, Dun Laoghaire, has been providing training in Television, Video, Radio, Print Journalism, and Photography since 1992. Over the years it has developed and created new courses to meet the ever changing demands from those seeking to enter the media sector.
The following are some of the media courses offered at DFEi :

Audio & Visual Media Courses:

Creative Digital Media Production - QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Award in Media Production (5M18518)
Duration: 1 Year

This course is designed to introduce the learner to a range of techniques used in Audio and Visual Media Production. Learners also gain practical knowledge of how different media products are produced as well as knowledge of how the relationships between producer, advertiser and audience impact on one another. The learner will be introduced to a range of techniques used in audio and visual media production. Students will acquire skills in Stills Photography and darkroom techniques, Television &Video Production, Avid Media Composer Editing, Radio Studio Production and Editing with Adobe Audition, Scriptwriting for Film TV and Radio.

Many learners look upon this course as a good introduction to media production, especially if they are unsure what area of media production they want to specialise in. Learners also look upon this course as an excellent foundation course for developing portfolios for Degrees in IADT, Tallaght IT, Dundalk IT, DIT, NUI Maynooth and other Universities.
Entry Requirements

  • No CAO points required
  • Leaving Certificate (Established)/LCVP
  • Leaving Certificate Applied
  • Relevant Level 4 QQI Award
  • Mature Applicants are welcome
Learners from the Audio Visual Media Production course may progress to the QQI (FETAC) Advanced Level 6 Award in Advanced TV and Digital Film Production (6M18534) or to the QQI (FETAC) Advanced Level 6 Award in Radio Broadcasting (6M5130) at DFEi.

Employment
While most graduates from this course do opt to advance to further studies, others have gained direct employment in radio stations, film and TV companies or photographic related employment.

Film & Television Courses:

TV and Digital Film Production - QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Award in Film and Television Production (5M18519) Duration: 1 Year

This course is designed to introduce the learners to the foundations of Television and Digital Film Production. Learners acquire skills in Television Studio Production, single Camera Production, non-linear Film and Video Editing, while gaining knowledge of how the relationships between producer, advertiser and audience impact on one another through media analysis. This course is highly practical. Core production modules require learners to conceive, develop and produce Digital Film, Television and Video productions, focusing on both camera and film and editing experience while producing original photographic portfolios. They will also learn how to format structure and workshop film, television and radio scripts to industry standards. Learners will be trained in Digital Camera and Film Production Techniques. DFEi uses the industry standard AVID Media Composer to give learners non-linear editing experience. Guest lectures from industry are an integral component of this programme.

Many learners look upon this course as a good introduction to Film and Television production as they produce a portfolio of work demonstrating technical competences and skills required for effective television and digital film production. It is also seen as an excellent foundation course for developing portfolios for Degrees in IADT, Tallaght IT, Dundalk IT, DIT, Maynooth and other Universities.

Graduates from this course may progress to the QQI (FETAC) Advanced Level 6 Award in Film and Television Production (6M18534) at DFEi.

Employment
While most graduates from this course do opt to advance to further studies, others have progressed to careers in Photography, Film and TV. A number have set up their own production companies.

Advanced TV and Digital Film Production - QQI (FETAC) Level 6 Award in Film and TV Production (6M18534) Duration: 1 Year

Entry Requirements QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Award Film and TV Production (5M18519), or Media Production (5M18518) or equivalent.
This Advanced Certificate enables the learner to build on existing knowledge and develop an in-depth knowledge of the skills required for careers working in Digital Film, Television and Video Production. This course is highly practical. Learners conceive, develop and produce Digital Film, Television and Video Production to industry standard as part of core production modules. This involves reading, analysing, formatting, structuring and work shopping Film, Television and Video Scripts while developing specialisations in their chosen areas. In addition learners will be trained in the following: Production Techniques for both Digital Tape and Hard Drive Cameras, Audio Skills and non-linear Editing on AVID Media Composer as well as Video Studio Production.
Learners will also work on drama and documentary short productions so that they can develop their personal initiative, leadership and team working skills.

Many learners look upon this course as a good stepping stone to developing a career into Film and Television production as well as further studies. This course is an excellent course for developing portfolios for Degrees in IADT, Tallaght, Dundalk, DIT, Maynooth and other Universities.

  • Degree Graduates
  • Applications are welcomed from mature learners with relevant experience in this area
Learners may also take advantage of the opportunity to be considered for Advanced Entry to IADT, IT Tallaght and Dundalk IT. Past students have gained offers of direct entry to second Year in the BA in Film and Television in IADT and offers of both second and third year in the BA in Film Production in Dundalk IT.

This course is highly practical. Learners conceive, develop and produce Digital Film, Television and Video Production to industry standard as part of core production modules. This involves reading, analysing, formatting, structuring and work shopping Film, Television and Video Scripts while developing specialisations in their chosen areas. In addition learners will be trained in the following: Production Techniques for both Digital Tape and Hard Drive Cameras, Audio Skills and non-linear Editing on AVID Media Composer as well as Video Studio Production.

Radio Broadcasting
Year 1 Radio Broadcasting - QQI (FETAC) Level 5 in Radio Production (5M4511)
Duration: 1 year

Year 2 Advanced Certificate in Radio Broadcasting QQI (FETAC) Level 6 Award Media Production (6M5130)
Duration: 1 year
The first year of this course is aimed at those interested in beginning a career in Radio Broadcasting. It provides a mix of essential background knowledge and practical Radio Production Skills. Learners will gain experience of recording in DFEi’s purpose built industry standard radio recording studio and complimentary editing suite. Learners will also have an opportunity to broadcast on DFEi’s internet radio station “The Wave Online” available at www.dfei.ie.
Entry Requirements (Year 1):
Leaving Certificate/LCVP (5 passes), Leaving Certificate Applied, Relevant QQI (FETAC) Level 4 Award, Mature Applicants

Year two of this course provides advanced knowledge and practice in the areas of Broadcast Voice Presentation, Digital Audio Processing, Radio Documentary Production and Radio Journalism. Learners in Year two will also gain direct radio broadcasting experience through the management and operation of DFEi’s radio station “The Wave” on 107.8fm.

Entry Requirements (Year 2)
QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Award Radio Production (5M4511) or equivalent, Degree Graduates, applications are also welcome from mature learners with relevant experience in this area
