Cillian Murphy has become the first Irish-born actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, for his role as the titular character in Oppenheimer. Element Pictures’ Poor Things has received four Academy Awards including Best Actress for Emma Stone.
Cillian Murphy joins Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot) and Barry Fitzgerald (Going My Way) as the only Irish-born actors to win an Academy Award. Daniel Day-Lewis, who has held dual British and Irish citizenship since 1993, has three Academy Awards for acting.
"I'm a very proud Irishman standing here tonight," said Murphy accepting the Best Actor award. "We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we're all living in Oppenheimer's world, so I would really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.
He concluded: "Go raibh míle maith agaibh."
Murphy's Oscar win follows his recent BAFTA and SAG Award wins.
Oppenheimer received 7 Oscars last night, including Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Supporting Actor
Element Pictures' Poor Things took home four awards including Best Actress for Emma Stone, as well as Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, and Costume Design.
