The Irish cinematographer has achieved the award for Outstanding Achievement in Craft for his work on ‘American Honey,’ just one of four awards for the Cannes 2016 Jury Prize Winner.
As well as taking home the top prize for Best British Independent Film, Andrea Arnold was awarded Best Director and Sasha Lane Best Actress.
This marks the first BIFA win for Ryan, who is a three-time Best Technical Achievement Nominee for ‘Fish Tank’ (Andrea Arnold), ‘Ginger & Rossa’ (Sally Potter) and ‘Catch Me Daddy’ (Daniel Wolfe).
Best Documentary went to ‘Notes on Blindness’ featuring Irish Actress Simone Kirby, who received an IFTA Nomination in 2015 for her lead role in ‘Jimmy’s Hall’ (Ken Loach). Peter Middleton and James Spinney co-direct this exploration of author John Hull’s experience of losing his sight, which he recorded on audiocassettes throughout the mid-late 80s.
UK talent Dave Johns was awarded the Best Actor prize for his work on ‘I, Daniel Blake’, the Palme d’Or winner which also had Robbie Ryan behind the camera. Hayley Squires also achieved the award for Best Newcomer for her work on Ken Loach’s most recent feature.
