Donal Gilligan
Irish cinematographer Donal Gilligan passed away on Sunday, 19 September 2010, he was 46. Much loved amongst his friends and colleagues within the Irish film and television industry, the two time IFTA nominee suffered a sudden heart attack on Sunday night. more
EVENTS | IFTA Celebrates TV Legend Cathal O'Shannon

Broadcaster and journalist Cathal O'Shannon yesterday became a lifetime member of the Irish Film and Television Academy at an intimate IFTA tribute event which took place in Dublin's Conrad hotel. The event saw the 83 year old joined by friends, old colleagues and industry peers as he took part in a public interview with IFTA Lifetime member Gay Byrne. This was followed by the presentation of a specially made Life in Television statuette. more

PRODUCTION | Cillian Murphy & Thandie Newton Begin 'Retreat'

Irish production company Ripple World Pictures began shooting this week in Wales on the British psychological thriller 'Retreat' starring Cillian Murphy (Inception, Perrier's Bounty, The Dark Knight), Thandie Newton (2012, RocknRolla, Crash) and Jamie Bell (Defiance, Jumper, Billy Elliot) in co-production with the UK's Magnet Films. more

Following on from its success earlier this year in closing a sale of 37 titles to Channel 4 in the U.K., Network Ireland Television (NITV) has announced the completion of a licensing deal for short film packages with Turner Broadcasting in South America and NBC Universal in Singapore. more

The Irish Film Board is currently inviting applications for a new Chief Executive Officer who will start with the group next January. The move coincides with the conclusion of the five year term of appointment of current CEO, Simon Perry. Applications for the role will be accepted until Friday, October 8th. more
FESTIVALS | Celtic Call, 'Fairycatcher' & 'July'
Low budget documentary, 'Twas a Morning in July' has scooped two prizes at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival, whilst Kealan O'Rourke's 'Fairycatcher' has been selected for the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Celtic Media Festival is currently inviting submissions for its 19 categories. more

RTÉ Television has announced the appointment of MairÉad Ní Nuadháin to the position of Deputy Director of Programmes. MairÉad, formerly RTÉ's Commissioning Editor of Irish Language, Multiculture and Education will now take over from Mary Curtis who has moved to the position of Director of Digital Switchover. more
FESTIVALS | Cinemagic Unveils 20th Anniversary Highlights
The 20th annual Belfast Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People takes place this November. The event will see more than 100 films from around the world - more than 20 of which are UK/Irish previews and premieres - screening alongside over 60 workshops, competitions, masterclasses and other film related events. Festival attendees will include Oscar winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), director Mike Hodges (Get Carter) and actor Jason Flemyng (Snatch). more
AWARDS | 'MO' Gets Grierson Nod
Northern Ireland drama, 'MO' has been nominated for a Grierson Award in the category of Best Drama Documentary. The Channel 4 / ITV co-production explores the life and political work of Mo Mowlam, played by Julie Walters (Mamma Mia!), who was instrumental in achieving one of the most monumental landmarks in British history, the Good Friday Agreement. The Grierson awards ceremony will take place on November 2nd. more

The second block of filming will commence on Soacute;nta's quiz show 'Ceist GAA' on Friday, October 1st. The first block of the shoot saw four teams qualify to take part in the first ever GAA quiz show. This block is currently being broadcast on TG4. more
PRODUCTION | RTÉ Factual Seeks Programme Pitches
RTÉ Factual has announced that it immediately requires ideas for ambitious singles and series for early-mid 2011. The broadcaster is actively seeking proposals for observational, investigative and people-centered docs that spotlight any issues, challenges or dilemmas that affect Irish people now. The Factual department is further seeking ideas for programmes that will transmit in 2012 as part of Irish television's 50th anniversary. more
