Ashford Castle Hotel & Country Estate
Located on the West Coast, this 13th-century, five-star castle sits on the northern shores of Lough Corrib, ½ hour from Galway City. The Castle is equidistant from both Ireland West Knock and Galway airports. Once a country estate of the Guinness family, it was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1939 and now offers 83 guest rooms.
Activities on the estate include golf, fishing, boat-cruising and the ancient art of falconry, whilst treatment rooms, a sauna and steam room can also be enjoyed.
Various film shoots have taken place in Ashford Castle, most notably, the classic John Ford film – The Quiet Man in 1951, with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. The film, the Purple Taxi with Charlotte Rampling was also shot here, as were two hour long episodes of Remington Steele with Pierce Brosnan.
Pierce loved Ashford so much that years later he returned to take exclusive use of the Castle for his nuptials to Keely Shay Smith.
Ashford Castle is also pleased to have had the pleasure of welcoming as guests, some of cinema’s greatest stars from Nina Ricci, Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson and Barbara Streisand to name but a few |
