A famous medium, Mrs. Henderson, is invited to Dublin. In a series of seances, she brings forth the spirits of Jonathan Swift and his two lovers, Stella and Vanessa. Jonathan met Stella in his earlier years and she becomes his life-long companion. Later he begins an affair with Vanessa and writes her an erotic poem, Cadenus and Vanessa, which he publishes under a pseudonym. The two women are passionately jealous of each other, and Jonathan must keep them apart. However he denies both women their dying wish when he refuses to publicly acknowledge either his marriage to Stella or admit he wrote the poem.
