Children's story set in modern day Ireland. Chris and Joe are close friends despite coming from very different backgrounds. Chris' outwardly perfect family epitomize middle class values while Joe's family is scattered, and he lives with his rather brutal uncle in a caravan. Chris wishes to escape his uneventful upbringing and travel, while Joe who has spent his life travelling with a circus wants to settle down and have some stability. However the real test to their friendship is not their differing backgrounds but the discovery that Joe's other friend is actually a girl. Chris is faced with the challenge of integrating with the opposite sex.
My Friend Joe won the Silver Bear at the 1996 Berlin Film Festival and the Golden Sparrow at the 1997 German Children's Film Festival.
