One evening Cathryn is unhinged upon seeing an image of her former lover Rene. The hallucinations begin to occur more often, so that her images of her husband Hugh and Rene synthesize. Her own fantasies and hallucinations begin to merge with reality.
Hugh takes her away for a break in the countryside to relax, but this opportunity is ruined by the chance appearance of Marcel another former lover who wants to renew their affair. She is further disconcerted upon seeing Marcels' daughter Susannah whom she identifies with her younger self. Cathryn is utterly tormented and attempts to violently destroy the images.
