IFI Remembering Mick Lally
01 Oct 2010 :
Mick Lally
A special evening of screenings dedicated to the life and work of Mick Lally will take place at Dublin’s IFI on October 11th

The actor, who passed away on August 31st, was a major force in Irish theatre and one of the founders of Galway's Druid Theatre, and also had a long film and television career. Audiences can watch Mick’s screen performances in ‘That’s All Right’ and ‘Roma’ following an introduction by the actor’s friend and colleague Garry Hynes.

The evening is to be attended by many of his friends, colleagues and family. Lally was well-known and loved at home for his long-running appearance as Miley in RTE's ‘Bracken’ and ‘Glenroe’. His memorable film performances include ‘The Ballroom of Romance’ alongside Brenda Fricker in 1982, ‘The Secret of Roan Inish’ in 1994 and ‘Circle of Friends’ in 1995. In more recent years he appeared in Oliver Stone's ‘Alexander’ and provided the voice of Brother Aidan in the Oscar-nominated Irish animation ‘The Secret of Kells’. His final performance is in Carmel Winter's yet-to-be-released ‘Snap’.

The evening will open with Billy McCannon's short, ‘That's All Right’ and the RTÉ drama ‘Roma’. IFI Curator, Sunniva O'Flynn, has said of the event: “We are very pleased that, following Garry Hynes' lead, and thanks to the collaboration of the RTÉ Archive, we can, for probably the first time in 30 years, present Roma - a drama by Eugene McCabe which features Mick Lally as a lovelorn odd-job man in a chipper.”

Garry Hynes, Artistic Director of Druid Theatre will provide an introduction to the screenings, and has praised her late friend, saying: ”His fame on television can sometimes overshadow the very significant work he did on Irish film. In particular I'm looking forward to seeing again his powerful performance in Roma.”

All proceeds from the evening will be donated to Pakistan Flood Relief. Tickets are available from the IFI Box Office, by calling 01 679 3477, and online at www.ifi.ie
