Galway Film Fair
The 24TH virtual Galway Film Fair wrapped on Sunday after a successful week of online marketplace meetings, seminars, talks, Peripheral Visions and the pitching competition.

The Fair is the industry arm of the Galway Film Fleadh, and mirrors the festival’s reputation as uniquely intimate, informal and accessible, and acts as a key industry networking event in the international Film Calendar and a Launchpad for projects at various stages of development through its vibrant marketplace.

The Marketplace at the Galway Film Fair scheduled over 570 one on one meetings between producers and International Sales Agents, Distributors, Broadcasters, Film Funds, and Talent Agents. 2020’s Marketplace received an unprecedented number of applications with companies and producers attending from 22 countries including Ireland, UK, Germany, Korea, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Finland, Belgium, Romania, Serbia, Norway, Georgia, Denmark, Austria, USA, and Canada. Decision Makers included Ted Hope (Double Hope), Charlotte Mickie (Celluloid Dreams), Thorsten Ritter (Beta Cinema), Romain Rancurel (Elle Driver), Rickard Olsson (Picture Tree International), Maelle Guenegues (Cat &Docs) and Dana O’Keefe (Cinetic Media).

Outside of the Marketplace the annual Fleadh Forum presented a series of three free webinars with the theme of Looking Towards Tomorrow focusing on the pertinent issues facing our industry in light of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Presented by the WRAP fund and joined by a host of Industry Experts, including Eamonn Bowles (Magnolia Pictures), Rebecca O’Brien (16 Films), Helge Albers (FFHSH/Hamburg Film Fund), Simon Perry (ACE Producers), Cara Cusumano (Tribeca Film Festival), Stephen Kelliher (Bankside Films), David Collins (Samson Films), Ben Coren (Film4), and Dionne Farrell (BBC Films). Discussions covered topics including the strategic process of development, the future of co-production, and the next steps for film sales, distribution, and exploitation.

In addition to the Marketplace and Forum, there were In Conversations with Actor Keith Carradine, Screenwriter Nicole Holofcener, and Director Joe Dante.

This year’s pitching award saw 10 finalists pitch their idea live online as a 90 second ‘Elevator Pitch’, to a virtual panel of industry judges and audience. The award, a cash prize of €3,000 to go towards the development of the project, was awarded to Alice McDowell with Rainsong.

As part of the Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture programme, Peripheral Visions featured as a co-curated competition of twelve films selected by members of the Europa Film Festivals Network, followed by a Q&A with each festival and filmmaker. The winning film was the Luxembourg City Film Festival entry River Tales directed by Julie Schroell who was awarded with a prize of €3,000.

The Galway Film Fair is supported by Fís Eireann/Screen Ireland, Creative Europe, Northern Ireland Screen, and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
