Stephen Butcher trained as a director at Granada Television in
1972, working on a range of programmes from news, current affairs and
documentary to light entertainment and drama. He left Granada to direct
freelance (mainly drama) in 1979. From 1984 to 1989 he was Drama Producer
at Ulster Television after which he returned to freelance directing and
founded Lagan Pictures.
From 1994 to 1996 he was co-executive producer of
the first two series of the "Northern Lights" short film scheme for BBC
Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Film Council. In addition to his
Irish credits (listed) he has directed extensively in Britain for the BBC,
the major ITV companies and Channel 4.In recent years he has worked mainly in the Republic of Ireland, on Fair City for RTÉ and Ros na Rún for TG4.
