Barry Keoghan impresses Internationally in Rave ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ Reviews

The latest feature film from ‘The Lobster’ helmer Yorgos Lanthimos in which Keoghan stars alongside Nicole Kidman and fellow Irish talent Colin Farrell, has received rave reviews at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, with many focusing on the calibre of the young actor.

Keoghan plays sixteen year old Martin in the psychological drama, whose obsessive relationship with heart surgeon Steven (Farrell) has terrifying consequences for his wife (Kidman) and children (Raffey Cassidy & Sunny Suljic).

‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ is the seventh production or co-production from Element Pictures to screen in competition at the festival, with Lanthimos’ ‘The Lobster’ earning the Jury Prize in 2015. Lanthimos produces alongside Element’s Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.

The Hollywood Reporter commend Keoghan for giving, “...a performance of chilling effectiveness”, which in turn is described as “wonderfully disturbing” by Collider.

Keoghan also stars in 2017 title ‘Dunkirk’ (Christopher Nolan) alongside heavy-hitting screen talents such as Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders), Tom Hardy (London Road) and Kenneth Branagh (Mindhorn). Others are ‘Light Thereafer’ (Konstantin Bojanov) the upcoming ‘Black ‘47’ (Lance Daly) and ‘American Animals’ (Bart Layton).

In April of this year he was nominated for the prestigious Rising Star award from the Irish Film & Television Academy, with a previous nomination in 2016 for Best Actor in a Lead Role Film for ‘Mammal’ (Rebecca Daly).

James Hickey, Chief Executive, Irish Film Board:
“...the critics’ reaction to ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ is so overwhelmingly positive. I’m particularly pleased to see Barry Keoghan breakthrough as a major international star to watch and I would like to congratulate Ireland’s Element Pictures, undisputedly now one of the world’s leading production companies, on their return to Competition in Cannes in the space of two years, following the 2015 success of The Lobster and an Oscar nomination for Room in between.”

Donald Clarke, The Irish Times:
“Keoghan achieves his international breakthrough with a performance that cunningly conceals vengeful ambitions behind a disingenuously obliging exterior. He holds his own admirably against such experienced pros as Kidman and Farrell.”

Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair:
“There’s a terrifying, atavistic form of justice and revenge at work in Sacred Deer, a reckoning for past sins that turns the film into something of a classical tragedy, albeit one with a decidedly modern sense of cynicism and wit.”

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter:
“Reaching back to classical Greek tragedy for inspiration, this hypnotic tale of guilt and retribution provides an even more riveting role for Colin Farrell after his collaboration on the director's English-language debut, The Lobster. He's flanked by a never-better Nicole Kidman and a performance of chilling effectiveness from emerging Irish talent Barry Keoghan in a thriller that frequently invites comparison to vintage Polanski.”
