Producer Emer Durcan and Director Jason Branagan were among the 2024 JETS winners for their project The Others.
Irish project The Others has been named among the winners of the JETS 2024 Initiative. The Others (budget: €1.2 million) is a thriller with science fiction elements. The plot synopsis is as follows: “While travelling around the country terminating human-like, otherworldly beings called ‘Others’, a young assassin discovers that one of her kills was a human and sets about to prevent further killings until she can determine the difference between them and us. The film follows a classic redemption arc - bad people learning to be good. It deals with the themes of identity and humanity and explores what they mean.”
Now in its eight year, The JETS Initiative is a two-day international film festival that brings talented producers and directors together with funding organisations, sales agents, and financing and distribution companies from the partner countries Germany, Austria, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Norway, the UK and the USA for their debut, second or third film. The awards recognise feature film projects that have artistic and/or commercial potential.
Other winners include UK entry The Sleeper (producer Sara Gibbings, director Jo Southwell, budget: 4.1 million), a female-led road movie with psychological undertones, described as “Gina Davies and Susan Sarandon on speed”. There is also the Austrian entry A Cutter’s Coffers directed by G.S. Leitgeb and produced by Viktor Perdula; German entry Fulgidusen directed by Alexander Feichter and produced by Markus Frings; Canadian entry A Nose for Trouble directed by Natty Zavitz and produced by Stephanie Sonny Hooker, and South African entry Slay directed by Kelsey Egan and produced by Daniel Perlman.
