Steve McQueen’s Camera d’Or winner ‘Hunger’ continues its successful festival circuit run - picking up the Diesel Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend.
The award was voted by the 1,000-international members of the festival press corps and offers a $10,000 cash prize and a custom award sponsored by DIESEL Canada. This isn’t the first time an Irish title has taken the Toronto award, with Pete Travis’ ‘Omagh’ taking the top houour in 2004.
’Hunger’ is based on IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, played by Kerry raised Michael Fassbender (300). The film was shot in Northern Ireland with finance from Northern Ireland Screen, BCI and Film4 and will be released nationwide on October 31st.
Other winners at the festival included Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ which won the Cadillac People's Choice Award and Steve Jacobs 'Disgrace’ which won the prize for the International Critics for Special Presentations.
