Irish filmmaker Niall McKay has scooped an Emmy for his documentary ‘Sikhs in America’ at the 37th Annual North California Emmy Awards, which took place on May 10th at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
Wicklow-born McKay produced and directed the doco with Marissa Aroy, through their San Francisco based production company The Media Factory. ‘Sikhs in America’, which won the Emmy in the Best Historic / Cultural Program category, gives an insight into the Sikh community in the US, its religious traditions, home and working life.
McKay previous credits include documentary ‘Uneasy Peace’, on Northern Ireland, produced for Frontline World. Also a journalist, he is a regular contributor to publications including The Economist, New York Times, Financial Times and Forbes Magazine. He is also co-founder and director of the San Francisco Irish Film Festival.
McKay is currently working on a documentary supported by the Irish Arts Council called ‘The Bass Player’, which follows McKay’s father, Jim, a jazz bass player, on his journey home from Zurich to Ireland, following the death of his second wife.
‘Sikhs in America’ will air on KQED on Monday 19th May at 7.30pm, as part of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
