Screen Training Ireland and the
Silk Road Film Festival are collaborating to host a Cinematography Masterclass with Iranian Cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari this Saturday, March 22, from 12 – 4pm at Screen Cinema.
Kalari has brought the vision of many great Iranian directors to life, such as Palme d'Or winner Abbas Kiarostami, Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi and Jafar Panahi. The cinematographer will also receive a special honorary award for Lifetime Achievement at the Lord Mayor of Dublin Mansion House.
Kalari’s four-hour masterclass will present a Scene by Scene breakdown of award winning films ‘A Separation’ (Jodái-e Náder az Simin) and ‘Fish & Cat’ (Mahi Va Gorbeh). ‘A Separation’ won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012, becoming the first Iranian film to win the award. It was also nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award, making it the first non-English film in five years to achieve this. Kalari shot ‘Fish & Cat’ in a single take. The film combines formal experimentation and suspense horror with a sense of humour that is rare in Iranian cinema. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, which will be chaired by Award Winning Irish Director and Cinematographer Michael Lavelle (Patrick’s Day). The masterclass will provide a learning experience for directors, producers, cinematographers, camera departments and film students.
Kalari started his film career in 1984 as the cinematographer of ‘Jadehay sard’ (1985) (Frosty Roads) for which he won the Best Cinematography award at Tehran's Fajr International Film Festival. He has shot more than 65 films since then including some of the most critically acclaimed and talked about movies in Iran and internationally.
